From January 2008
European Standards for Asphalt
EN Harmonisation
What this means:
-
NEW PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS
-
NEW TESTING METHODS
-
NEW PRODUCT VALIDATION AND CE MARKING
-
HOWEVER, THE PRODUCT REMAINS THE SAME.
From January 2008, harmonised European Standards will apply to the specification, testing and production of asphalt products.
The purpose of this harmonisation is principally to eliminate barriers to trade within the European economy and currently 27 countries, including the UK, have agreed to its implementation.
Essentially asphalt products will remain the same but the changes will affect the way in which we describe them and requirements for a more rigorous production control regime will give even greater confidence in asphalt product quality.
The standards are composed of two groups, Material Specifications and Test Methods;
for which Published Documents (PD’s) have been produced to give specific UK guidance on their use and application, the most important of which is PD6691, covering the Asphalt Mixtures – the indispensable reference document for asphalt specifiers, suppliers and purchasers in the UK.
Delivery and installation procedures will be specified in a separate document entitled ‘Specification for transport, laying and compaction of asphalt for roads and other paved areas BS594987’. This document will be the consolidation of the HRA BS594 part 2 and the macadam specification BS4987 part 2.
The most visible change to our customers will be the new product descriptions. To conform with the new European legislation, product descriptions will be made up of 6 elements:
-
Mixture type: AC (Asphalt Concrete), SMA, HRA,
-
Nominal size of material: eg 32 (32mm) down to and including 4 (4mm)
-
Description of grading characteristics: Dense, Open, Close, Med (Medium), Fine
-
Pavement layer: Base, Bin (Binder), Surf (surfacing), Reg (regulating)
-
Binder Grade: eg 40/60
-
Description of PSV of aggregate (optional)
For example a 0/20mm Dense Bindercourse using 100/150 penetration grade bitumen is described as, AC 20 Dense Bin 100/150 under the new standard.
PROPRIETARY PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS WILL NOT CHANGE – this legislation principally affects mixtures supplied directly in accordance with the requirements of new European Standards.
