BARDON SUPERFLEX WINS QUALITY IN CONSTRUCTION AWARD

Bardon Aggregates, part of Aggregate Industries, is celebrating the success of its proprietary asphalt product, Bardon Superflex, after winning the Quality in Construction Awards ‘Product and Materials Innovation’ category.

The Quality in Construction Awards are organised each year to highlight excellence in the industry and recognise the ambition, skill and management of construction teams. Now in their 10th year the awards are backed by the Department of Trade and Industry and Constructing Excellence.

The Research and Development team which submitted the Superflex entry had to demonstrate how the product has lead to increased performance, durability, safety, economy and competitiveness in the UK construction industry as a consequence of its research and development programme.

Bardon Superflex has been specially designed to optimise flexibility, fatigue life and resistance to permanent deformation which are critical to the behaviour of asphalt when laid over cracked or damaged pavement layers. Its properties give Bardon Superflex a considerable advantage over conventional asphalts, particularly for highly trafficked urban situations. It can be laid as a binder course, as a surface course, or as a combined single layer. When used as a running surface it offers better skid resistance and reduces road noise when compared with conventional asphalts.

Commenting, Graeme Richards, Aggregate Industries’ research & development laboratory manager, said, “This is a considerable achievement and recognises the hard work and dedication of the Research & Development team, Bardon Aggregates and Bardon Contracting in developing Bardon Superflex. It is the first time an asphalt product for highways has won this category. We feel this reflects the way our research has taken asphalt R&D over the last 10 years, to produce much more ‘technologically advanced’ products such as Bardon Superflex.”

Another Aggregate Industries business, Charcon, was also selected as a finalist for this award with Charcon Permavoid and Permachannel - key elements in the Aggregate Industries range of independently validated SUDS solutions, which satisfy the requirements of relevant environmental authorities, from design and supply through to installation. The judges considered it to be a strong manufacturing response to a developing market.
