BARDON AGGREGATES SHOWS OFF MOORCROFT QUARRY
More than 500 people, including school children, local residents, councillors and The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Patrick Nicholson, attended the Bardon Aggregates Moorcroft quarry open day.
Aiming to provide an interesting insight into the quarrying industry, the day gave visitors the opportunity to see what and why different processes take place at Moorcroft.
Major attractions this year, included: a staged exhibition detailing the quarry’s activities from past to present and future plans; a virtual reality “flythrough” tour, which allowed visitors to drive a three dimensional dumper in the quarry; and trips along Moorcroft’s recently refurbished access road in a rare Burrel steam engine pulling a passenger carriage.
Many local residents also chose to take part in a specially designed quarry tour, with quarry staff as guides. The tour encompassed the recently completed 120-metre tunnel below Haye Road, which allows stone to be removed from the new Hazeldene extension without disrupting traffic on the busy local road above.
One local resident summed up the general views of all those who took the opportunity to visit, saying: “It was an excellent tour and there was lots of information. The displays were clear and explanations well put across. My children were attentive throughout which is amazing.”
