BARDON AGGREGATES SCORES A HOME TRY
Aggregate Industries company, Bardon Aggregates is saving Cirencester Rugby Club an estimated £1,000 in the supply of over 150 tonnes of specially sourced silica sand to enhance the numerous playing fields ahead of the new season.
The club, which is based out of the Whiteway Clubhouse in Cirencester, operates three senior sides, a Veterans team and one of the largest junior sections in the area with over 350 mini and youth members.
Olly Dormer, site manager for Bardon Aggregates, Manor Farm Quarry in Kempsford, who agreed to the support, said: “The Cirencester Rugby Club is a well respected organisation in the area and has been in operation since 1949. Following a move in the late 1960’s to its current location, the club and pitches have been in constant use.
“As members of the Cotswold Sites Community Engagement and Liaison Group, Bardon Aggregates have been involved in a number of local community projects, so when the club’s problem came to our attention, we were eager to help. After discussing it with the club, and seeing the fields, we were happy to supply the material for the renovations at a cost price.”
Mike Timbrell, groundsman and coach at the club, who took delivery of the material from Calne Sand Pit in Wiltshire earlier this week, said “The sand will considerably improve the drainage of the training paddock, hopefully allowing its use for much more of this season. Last year the area was waterlogged and unusable for some time. On Sundays we often have over 300 children at the Club and when parts of the grounds are unavailable due to being waterlogged things become somewhat crowded!”
Lloyd Williams, chairman of the club, said: “We are really pleased that Bardon Aggregates has agreed to work with us on this project, the saving will allow us to develop other aspects of the Club. This year we are opening a new first team pitch and have extended the bar during the off season. Given the Club’s recent success, finalists in all Senior District competitions and our Colts reigning County Champions, it is important that we continue to develop both the playing a social facilities. The Club is real community activity and we welcome all new playing and social members at The Whiteway.”
The Cirencester Rugby Club is just one of many projects that the Cotswold Sites Community Engagement/Liaison group are currently undertaking within the local area.
