POWMYRE QUARRY OPENS ITS DOORS
Powmyre Quarry, owned and operated by Bardon Aggregates; one of the UK’s leading suppliers of construction and building materials, opened its doors for business on 10 March 2008.
The opening of Powmyre Quarry at Roundyhill in Glamis, complementing Bardon Aggregates’ existing site at Edzell Arnhall, strengthens its position as a local supplier of sand and 10mm to 40mm sized gravel products.
Aggregate Industries’ business, Bardon Aggregates, is a major supplier of primary, secondary and recycled construction aggregates and high quality asphalts, including proprietary materials for a wide range of specialist applications.
With an annual production capacity of some 300,000 tonnes, the opening of Powmyre means that Bardon Aggregates can meet the demands of a range of customers across the whole of Tayside and into Perthshire.
To minimise disturbance to local residents, Powmyre Quarry has implemented a compulsory traffic route for its delivery vehicles which avoids the village of Glamis entirely, and takes vehicles via a newly constructed access point to the main A94. Number plate recognition cameras are in place within the village to allow the company to monitor traffic movement.
Bardon Aggregates places sustainability and the environment high on its priority list. It firmly believes that effective management is the key to reducing the environmental impact over the full life cycle of its sites, products and services, including the restoration of extraction areas to the highest of standards.
As part of Bardon Aggregates’ ongoing community engagement plan, the company welcomes any requests from local organisations for site tours, where information about its quarry workings can be given in detail, questions answered and most importantly, the dangers present within a working quarry can be outlined, especially to young children to help ensure their safety.
Continuing its commitment to being a good neighbour, Aggregate Industries’ credentials include a Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index score of 100%, as more than 90% of its sites are certified to the ISO14001 environmental management systems standard.
It has received a prestigious British Standards Institution award for ‘Most Innovative Organisation’ in recognition of its commitment to environmental management across its UK operational units and contracting divisions.
Aggregate Industries also sponsors the Wildlife Trusts and has committed to supporting the environmental organisation’s involvement in the BBC Breathing Places campaign over the next three years.
